After a wet night, we awoke to dark skies over Pulau Pangkor. Oh no, rain again! It finally dumped lots of liquid with very strong winds.
The start was scheduled for 1155 hours. One of our crew went ashore to pick up some ice but he was stuck onshore as the ferryboat refused to operate because of the rainsquall. We waited and waited but he didn’t turn up. By the time he did appear, it was way pass the start time and we had to retire from the race.
We weighed anchor and motored out towards the open sea but it was a struggle against the strong wind and massive churning seas. Took some effort but we finally made it out and started heading towards Penang. The wind was quite strong, so we managed to only put up a reefed main and the staysail. The seas were pretty confused and we managed to take a greenie over the boat. Wet, wet, wet and I am not talking about the song from Michael Learns To Rock. Not just from the rain, but also from the sea. There is only so much liquid one can take. It was so rolly no one wants to go down below.
Sometime during the night the stars actually appeared. It was quite a fantastic sight, especially after all that rain. We approached Penang at about 0500 hours and as the sun rose, we could see the Penang Bridge and it was a really pretty picture. Sorry, forgot to snap a photo.
We got to the Tanjung City Marina, Penang about 0800 hours on Tuesday, 17 Nov 09.
In the evening, there was a trishaw race organized by the regatta committee. It was a really fun event, with lots of laughs. And just after the festivities were over, guess what, it stormed again and rained all night.
There was an in-shore race schedule for Wednesday, 18 Nov 09 but we decided not to take part and instead went for a culinary day. Roti Chennai, Penang Laksa, Hokkien (prawn) mee, lor mee, etc. Yum-oh.
Tonight we will be having the prize-giving dinner at Khoo Kongsi, which is a temple completed around 1906 and belongs to the Khoo Kongsi clan.
