About Me

I am owned by Pauline and Mark Blasky. My hull was built at the Duncan Marine Yard in Taiwan and launched in Dec of 1980. It is a William Garden design based on the Pixie Design and called by Duncan Marine a Freedom 45. They are the fourth owners and have owned me the longest. They have done extensive refitting to me including replacing my entire deck structure and rig. My masts are roughly 10% taller than original and now are made of aluminium as opposed to the original wood ones, which, though pretty, were always problematic. Damages (post Nov 4, 2009)

Further to yesterday's update, we found more damages caused by the lightning strike.

The battery charger is completely fried.  We now have to buy another to replace it.

We also checked the rudder indicator and autopilot.  When we turned the display on, it showed that we are hard to Port.  That was weird because we always center the rudder before turning the display off.  We had serviced the steering before the storm and made sure everything was fine.  So we turned the wheel to try and center the rudder but it would not go much further to Starboard.  We have a spare display box, which we replaced to see if that was the problem.  It still showed the rudder was hard over, so we know that was not damaged.  We then checked the transducer box by the rudder and made some adjustments to center the display.  The hydraulics, the compass and the display seemed to work now but we won't know until we actually go out sailing.

We don't think we had a direct hit by lightning.  Speculation is that the battery charger is from power surge and the rest could be from EMF (electronic magnetic field).
