Well 29 hours of motor sailing. That is to say we had the main up to steady the boat but basically was being driven by the prop. Amami island looks beautiful. We loved the motor in to the harbour here, it seems to have dozens and dozens of great bays but our cruising permit kind of limits us to the main ports. We went for the famous Chicken Rice Soup here last night. Very Oishi! (Japanese for tasty) We hope to spend a couple of days here and do some exploring, but we need to be careful of the Hubo! This is the local snake that somehow bred with a cobra and has a pretty deadly venom. Also something unique to Amami is they are successfully farming the big tunas. Apparently Amami shocked the world by flying in some of the best sushi chefs from Tokyo and did a test to compare the farmed fish to the real thing. Every chef failed and picked the farmed fish as the better fish.
The weather here is still very cold for us. But we are getting better as our blood thickens. Will add more as we explore more.
About Me
- SY Sari Timur
- Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico
- I am owned by Pauline and Mark Blasky. My hull was built at the Duncan Marine Yard in Taiwan and launched in Dec of 1980. It is a William Garden design based on the Pixie Design and called by Duncan Marine a Freedom 45. They are the fourth owners and have owned me the longest. They have done extensive refitting to me including replacing my entire deck structure and rig. My masts are roughly 10% taller than original and now are made of aluminium as opposed to the original wood ones, which, though pretty, were always problematic.
